Martin Luther King, Jr., was a religious leader and social activist who led the civil rights movement in the United States from the mid-1950s until his assassination in 1968. His leadership was fundamental to that movement’s success in ending the legal segregation of African Americans in the South and other parts of the United States. He helped establish the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, an organization dedicated to full equality of African Americans in all aspects of American life. He promoted nonviolent tactics to achieve civil rights and led a number of peaceful protests, such as the famous March on Washington in 1963. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.

John C. Calhoun

John C. Calhoun, hailing from the confederate state of South Carolina, was a Senator, Secretary of War, and Vice-President. His ideologies fueled the Civil War, he was a mastermind of the confederacy and architect for the Indian Removal Act of 1830, and a staunch advocate of slavery. While Secretary of War, John C. Calhoun devised the first plans for Indian removal, resulting in the Indian Removal Act of 1830. This opened the door to the forced removal of tens of thousands of Native Americans from their lands, including Choctaw, Muscogee, Chickasaw, and Seminole people. Thousands of Cherokee were forcibly removed by the U.S. military in 1838 in what is now known as the Trail of Tears. The resulting deaths of many of these people essentially equate to genocide and is a scar this nation bears even today. The Indian Removal Act subsequently also established pressure that led to the removal of the Miami Indians from in our very own city of Fort Wayne. Calhoun’s policies were felt locally, and not in a positive way. In an 1837 speech on the Senate floor, Calhoun stated “where two races of different origin, and distinguished by color, and other physical differences, as well as intellectual, are brought together, the relation now existing in the slaveholding States between the two, is, instead of an evil, a good—a positive good” and goes on to describe how slavery benefited both slaves and owners. (No records indicate John C. Calhoun ever set foot in Fort Wayne, and has no ties to our city.)
